As a journalist in Abuja, the capital city of Nigeria, I spent several months filing stories for a news organization based in Lagos, the former capital.  Eventually, however, I lost my job due to a reorganization in the company. Of course, the situation gave rise to loss of income.  One thing led to another, and I was compelled to return to my home state of Imo  I was brokenhearted over the job loss.

Shortly after, well-meaning suggestions poured in about how I could survive unemployment.  One piece of advice came from a kinsman who opined that I should take to alcohol, as it would make me happy.  I turned down his advice due to the conviction that, if anything alcohol would give me only temporary happiness and afterward worsen my situation, and more important, jeopardize my devotion to the healing ministry of Christian Science.

The Christian Science Bible Lessons reassured me that God is the source of our supply and heals the brokenhearted.  They also reminded me that God, not material things, comforts us, and we can never lose God's comfort.  The Apostle Paul wrote to the Romans, "Who shall separate us fro the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? . . . Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerers through him that loved us.  For I am persuaded, that neither death, not life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord? (Romans 8: 35, 37-39).

When I was feeling grief and anguish, I often found solace in the hymn from Christian Science Hymnal, as the words to these hymns are a soothing balm to troubled minds.  I was, therefore, able to overcome the heartbreak, and to trust in God as the source of my supply.  This trust was not in vain, as I found other employment that kept me going at that time, and I continue to be engaged in productive work.

God remains faithful to us all.

Whie the writer does not menion the hymn number, I found the following hymn that matches the writers intent (number 224)

O Lord, I would delight in Thee,

And on Thy care depend;

To Thee in every trouble flee,

My best, my ever Friend.

When all material streams are dried,

Thy fullness is the same;

May I with this be satisfied,

And glory in Thy name.

All good, where’er it may be found,

Its source doth find in Thee;

I must have all things and abound,

While God is God to me.

O that I had a stronger faith,

To look within the veil,

To credit what my Saviour saith,

Whose word can never fail.

He that has made my heaven secure,

Will here all good provide;

While Christ is rich, can I be poor?

What can I want beside?

O God, I cast my care on Thee;

I triumph and adore;

Henceforth my great concern shall be

To love and praise Thee more.

It couldn’t get a whole lot worse. For the “crime” of practicing Christian healing in accordance with the teachings of Christ Jesus, and in the presence of a violent mob, they’d been arrested, beaten,
